This Baron's Court pattern was manufactured starting in 2001 by the Waterford China company (Part of Waterford Crystal, itself a part of the WWRD Group), based in Ireland. Named after a medieval "Baron's Court" this bone china pattern marks Waterford's attempt in design irony. On the one hand, medieval lords were known for extreme ostentatious pageantry and colorful designs and coats of arms. On the other hand, there persists the notion of the gentleman, the chivalrous knight who risks all to help others, who is both quiet and bold, thoughtful yet courageous. Waterford Baron's Court China attempts to recreate and fuse both of these sentiments. The swirling scrolls which dominate the border are all-encompassing and domineering. But the are done in white on white which makes their loudness appear clothed in quiet elegance. Add on the soft, thin platinum bands and trim, which reveal wealth in hints, wisps, and one may argue that Waterford has achieved it's goal. Baron's Court popularity spawned a line of Waterford Flatware as well in the same style, also called Baron's Court.
Our favorite Waterford Baron's Court China pieces are the stately sugar bowl with lid as well as the oval serving bowl.
