All About Portieux Crystal

Brand: Portieux Country HQ: France Year Founded: 1705

Company Status: Active Founded By: Francois Magnien

Makers of: Crystal

Description: Founded in 1705 by Francois Magnien under the patronage of Duke Leopold of Lorraine. It was headquartered in close proximity to the raw materials required to make glass in Portieux, part of the Lorraine area of northeastern France. In the late 19th century, Portieux was purchased by Vallerysthal glass to help market their wares to French consumers. The company name included both Portieux and Vallerysthal in different ititerations and languages, depending on who the ruler of the region was, France or Germany.

In the years following WW1, the company experienced a resurgence, doing well in particular with bird-motif designs. They struggled post-WW2 and were forced to close in 1977, only to reopen in 1986. A merger with the French Crystal Company failed to prevent bankruptcy. Thereafter, in 1996, Portieux was purchased by the French concern Groupe Faience Niderviller who kept on the well known and long standing brand names of Portieux and Vallerysthal on some of their product lines. Devine Corporation currently markets these products in the U.S.
